The ASTRAIOS 190 in the Land of the Rising Sun

The ASTRAIOS 190 ARPES analyzer with ±30° full cone acceptance angle has been successfully installed and tested at the Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center by Robert Reichelt and Sven Maehl from SPECS, and Masashi Arita from HiSor.

We are pleased to announce the first installation of an ASTRAIOS 190 analyzer in Japan. The instrument has been successfully installed and commissioned under the supervision of Masashi Arita, beamline scientist at the BL-9 beamline at the HiSOR synchrotron in Hiroshima.

Using a new instrument is a big leap of faith, especially for a user facility. Therefore, we at SPECS are proud to have been entrusted with this task. After the installation and commissioning by Sven Mähl and Robert Reichelt, we received a message from Arita-san:

I am doing test measurements with your Graphene sample. The brightness of the new analyzer is probably higher. In our BL, I have not obtained the ARPES band image or a Fermi surface above 40 eV. Today, I can get the 6-Dirac point image of the Graphene with SWAM in “hν = 90 eV” which has not been used due to low photon flux. It is possible to perform in-situ sample orientation alignment and the overall band measurement which has been difficult before. (M. Arita, HiSor)

The ASTRAIOS 190 2D-CMOS is an upgrade of an existing end station for electronic structure studies in condensed matter physics. Perfectly adapted to the technical parameters of the BL-9 (hν = 5-40 eV, typical resolution E/EΔ = 20000-2000), the ASTRAIOS 190 extends the current possibilities for ARPES studies to parameters not accessible before. The key to this state-of-the-art ARPES analyzer is a single shifting electrode assembly that can shift the momentum image at a full acceptance angle of ±30° in a field-free environment. This allows a larger fraction of the momentum space to be obtained at one time. Its new virtual entrance slit combines superior optical precision with the highest energy resolution.
