New NAP-XPS system installed at University of Paderborn

First combined laboratory NAP-XPS and FTIR system with operando three- electrode electrochemical cell sucessfully installed.

The newly installed multimethod NAP-XPS system combines different analytical techniques for ultimate flexibility in the characterization of various samples and processes. With this system, catalytical processes of nanostructured or single crystal samples in different gas atmospheres and at different temperatures can be investigated by using NAP-XPS as well as FTIR techniques. The sample manipulator with laser heating ensures sample temperatures of up to 1000 °C in 25 mbar gas pressure. Complementary information about the vibrational signature of the molecules adsorbed on the sample surface can be obtained from the FTIR analysis . This is achieved by moving the sample manipulator to the FTIR analysis chamber which is inserted in a modifed Bruker Vertex 80v FTIR spectrometer with external detector. The FTIR chamber is coupled to the NAP-XPS analysis chamber and share the same manipulator. Additionally, chemical mapping of the sample can be performed by using the imaging lens module for the PHOIBOS 150 NAP analyzer.

Besides catalytic processes on solid samples, NAP-XPS investigations at liquid-solid interfaces as well as NAP-XPS measurements of electrochemical processes can be carried out by using the new developed electrochmical cell (EC-Cell) module. The in-situ refillable EC-Cell enlarges the existent product portfolio for NAP-XPS operando studies at liquid-solid interfaces (static EC-cell, Peltier cooling, liquid droplet setup) and allows for study of electrochemical processes between electrode and electrolyte. The EC-cell has a three electrode setup with working, reference and counter electrode and is mounted on a 4-axes manipulator. Thus, the area of interest for NAP-XPS measurements can be easily located. The cell can be used with or without a window. In order to minimize evaporation of the electrolyte from the investigation area, an additional buffer cell serves as a sacrifice trough for maintaining the vapor pressure value during the experiment. A membrane pump enables the filling of the EC-cell, as well as the buffer cell.
