Operando Studies with NAP-XPS on Aluminum Oxidation

The group of Francois Rochet from the Laboratoire de Chimie Physique Matière et Rayonnement at Sorbonne Université (CNRS) in Paris, France has recently published a paper in the Journal of Physical Chemistry C, where they used their NAP-XPS system installed at the Tempo beamline at Synchrotron Soleil for studying aluminum oxidation.

Aluminum and its oxide are key materials in the fabrication of Josephson quantum oscillators and qubits. Furthermore it is the metal for which the 1949 Nobel Prize winner Sir Neville Mott proposed his famous Cabrera-Mott model of low temperature oxidation. The tenets of this model are for first time demonstrated by the electron structure information obtained from operando studies with NAP-XPS in 1 mbar of oxygen atmosphere.
